I Never Wanted to be a Mother.
I saw motherhood as a restriction. In a cage like a bird, trapped. People asked ”Why don’t you have children?” It wasn’t good enough to say ‘‘I don’t want any.” Their faces changed to an expression of confusion. So my explanations would have to be more in-depth. I have to be honest about something. Something I knew deep down but did not want to admit. It was easier for me at the time to ignore it. Ignoring it meant I didn’t have to wake the beast. There are so many names and titles for different parenting styles now, I never knew that the way I had been parenting my children had a fashionable title.
I am what is known as a ‘Free Range Parent.‘ What exactly does that mean? I give my children choices. They have responsibilities. I encourage independence in line with their age.
